چکیده

Previous studies on the electrically-coupled gill epithelium of the mussel Elliptio complanatus failed to reveal the presence of gap junctions . Therefore, the septate junction, which is present as a prominent belt between all the epithelial cells in this tissue, seemed to be an attractive candidate for providing the low-resistance pathway necessary for electrical coupling (7, 19), as also was the case in invertebrate salivary gland epithelium (20) . Recently, there have been several reports that macular gap junctions can be found along with septate junctions in various invertebrate epithelia (8, 9, 10, 13, 16) . Since the gap junction is the membrane specialization found in the electrotonic synapse of the crayfish giant septate axon (14) and has been implicated in low-resistance coupling of vertebrate tissues (1, 5, 6, 17, 18), we thought it necessary to reexamine mussel gill material more extensively for gap junctions as part of our attempt to define the role of junctions in intercellular communication . In this paper, utilizing conventional thin-section and freezeetch electron microscopy, we report the coexistence of septate and gap junctions in mussel gill epithelium .

Coexistence of Gap and Septate Junctions in an Invertebrate Epithelium

The intercellular junctions of the epithelium lining the hepatic caecum of Daphnia were examined. Electron microscope investigations involved both conventionally fixed material and tissue exposed to a lanthanum tracer of the extracellular space. Both septate junctions and gap junctions occur between the cells studied. The septate junctions lie apically and resemble those commonly discerned betw...

Cell junctions in the excitable epithelium of bioluminescent scales on a polynoid worm: a freeze-fracture and electrophysiological study.

The bioluminescent scales of the polynoid worm Acholoe are covered by a dorsal and ventral monolayer of epithelium. The luminous activity is intracellular and arises from the ventral epithelial cells, which are modified as photocytes. Photogenic and non-photogenic epithelial cells have been examined with regard to intercellular junctions and electrophysiological properties. Desmosomes, septate ...

The Cell Junction in a Lamellibranch Gill Ciliated Epithelium

The junctional complex in the gill epithelium of the freshwater mussel (Elliptio complanatus) consists of an intermediary junction followed by a 2-3 micro long septate junction. Homologous and heterologous cell pairs are connected by this junction. After fixation with 1% OsO(4) containing 1% potassium pyroantimonate, electron microscopy of the gill reveals deposits of electron-opaque precipitat...
